Grateful Dead - Truckin'

My favorite verse of this song is as follows:

"Lately it occurs to me What a long, strange trip it's been.
Truckin', I'm a goin' home. Whoa whoa baby, back where I belong,
Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin' on.
Hey now get back truckin' home"

The older songs of the Grateful dead were from a time of discovery - both of one's self and the world around us. I think this song is about a depressing time when trying to go back home after new things have been discovered. It talks about substance abuse and how some ("Jane") try desperately to mask our own feelings and emotions with drugs. The song warns of using drugs and getting involved in other illegal activities because you can end up in trouble and there is a brighter path to take. I feel this song is about just going home after a long trip of exploration and with lots of new knowledge.

It is amazing how a song from a completely different time (and place) than my own can come out so vividly but I supppose we all "listen" to things in our own special way so my interpretation can be a little different than yours.
