Jerry Garcia was a musical legend and cultural icon, known for his amazing guitar, soulful voice, magical performances, psychedelic lifestyle, and fun-loving philosophy. With all the great music he created, it's no wonder we rarely get around to discussing the image of the man who brought us so much pleasure through his art. Jerry wasn't the vain or conceited type—he wasn't one to don the latest designer fashions and he was never a slave to trends. But like many superstars, Jerry's fashion sense underwent multiple transformations throughout his long career. Just check out this series of images to survey his many looks:
The Beatnik: Thick, blunt-cut bangs and a pretty, clean-shaven face made for Jerry's vintage 1965 Warlocks look.
The Shaggy Bear: Jerry's hair became longer and a little more wild and shaggy by the later years of the 1960's
The Wooly Wonder: In the early 1970's, Jerry was sporting his trademark full, wooly beard, thick, bushy hair, and round glasses.
The Touch of Gray: By the late 1970's, Jerry's beard and hair were definitely acquiring a touch of gray, but the fat man was still rocking hard and young at heart. Check out this video of the band playing live in 1978: http://youtu.be/CNZeoUl5c_0
The Santa: From the mid-eighties on, Jerry sported a prominently gray beard, and he often sported a black or red t-shirt which accentuated his round figure.
The transformations are subtle as you can see, but viewing the progression, it's interesting to note how his appearance changed as the years past on and the music developed. Which is your favorite Jerry look?
